Dave Chappelle’s TV return: comic set to host Saturday Night Live

Chappelle will make his SNL hosting debut on the Nov.12 episode, NBC announced Friday.

Pioneering hip hop troupe A Tribe Called Quest is set as the night’s musical guest. The group is set to release its first album in 18 years — We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service — a day earlier. The new album includes contributions from founding member Phife Dawg, who died in March.

American comedian and actor Chappelle is perhaps best known for his sharp, critically acclaimed and highly successful Comedy Central program Chappelle’s Show, a smash hit for its outrageous, boundary-pushing comedy and racial satire.

He left abruptly in 2005, leaving behind a massive $50 million US deal for the show’s third and fourth seasons, citing cultural, professional and personal concerns.

Afterward, he largely withdrew from the public eye, but continued to make occasional appearances at comedy clubs over the years. He also released the independent film Dave Chappelle’s Block Party.
