NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory has captured stunning images of magnetic fields on the sun.
The SDO, which NASA describes as the “the most advanced spacecraft ever designed to study the sun and its dynamic behaviour,” snapped images of the sun’s active regions from Sept. 28-29.
“Active regions are areas of strong magnetic fields. The magnetic field lines above these regions are illuminated by charged particles spiraling along them,” NASA said.
Electric currents inside the sun generate magnetic fields throughout the solar system.
The space agency released 12 hours of timelapse images of the solar light show.
An inset of the planet Earth is superimposed on the images to “give a sense of the scale of these towering arches.”
